Required Courses

EDAK 500. Found in Educ Leadership. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of the foundations of educational leadership. Lenses of power, influence, ethics, and leadership theory are utilized to compare personal diagnoses of leadership, learning, and personality strengths to the knowledge and skill set needed for leadership of prek-12 schools. An initial assessment of knowledge and skill and development of a professional growth plan are included. Prerequisite(s): MEd/Principal Certificate program admission or department chair approval.

EDAK 501. Research in Educ Leadership. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of the fundamentals of research with emphasis on research terminology, design, methodology, data collection, ethics, psychometric measurement qualities, and quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. The focus is on development of research and evaluation skills necessary to become critical consumers and producers of research in prek-12 schools. Prerequisite(s): MEd/Principal Certificate program admission or department chair approval.

EDAK 539. Processes of Edu Leadership. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of effective organizational processes in prek-12 schools. Learning organization strategies, exemplary leadership practices, and collaborative action tools are emphasized to support the development of a flexible and creative culture continuously engaged in the systemic work of school improvement. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500 & 501 or department chair approval.

EDAK 545. Ldrshp of Curriculum Systems. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of curriculum systems in prek-12 schools. The creation, alignment, integration, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum provide the focus for curriculum leadership and decision making that link student developmental needs with high levels of learning and support teachers in the curriculum implementation process. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500 & 501 or department chair approval.

EDAK 555. Ldrship of Diverse Learn Comm. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of diverse prek-12 school communities with an emphasis on ethical issues dealing with leadership, governance, and policy development. Processes for identifying and ameliorating issues associated with demographic and cultural differences are utilized to facilitate internal and external community engagement focused on equity and excellence. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 539, & 545 or department chair approval.

EDAK 509. Legal Issues in School Ldrship. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of legal issues impacting the administration of prek-12 schools. The ethical application of legal principles found in relevant constitutional, statutory, administrative, and case law is used to determine operation, organization, and administration of prek-12 schools. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship of state and federal law. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 516, 539, 545, & 555 or department chair approval.

EDAK 507. Ldrshp of Human Resources. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of programs and procedures in supervision and evaluation of faculty and staff in prek-12 schools. Effective supervisory and evaluation approaches provide the focus for the development of a continuous improvement learning culture for faculty and staff. The Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), a state-required teacher appraiser certification course, is included. $75 T-TESS certificate fee. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 516, 539, 545, 555, & AEL certification or department chair approval.

EDAK 542. Ldrshp of Campus Resources. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of school resources in support of school improvement. An integrated continuous improvement process supported by optimal allocation of financial, human, technological, facility, time, and other campus resources provides the focus for development of a safe and engaging school learning environment. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 507, 509, 516, 539, 545, & 555 or department chair approval.

EDAK 516. Ldrshp of Effect Instruct. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The study of instructional practice in prek-12 schools. The use of data analysis, learning strategies, special programs support, technology integration, and coaching protocols are emphasized in a continuous improvement cycle that ensures equity for and engagement of all students in high levels of authentic learning. Advancing Educational Leadership (AEL), a state-required teacher appraiser certification course, is included. $75 AEL certificate fee. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 539, & 545 or department chair approval.

EDAK 560. Educ Leadrshp Applications. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

The capstone study of the application of leadership theory to campus leadership practice. Critical issues in school leadership are analyzed through culminating experiences focused on the integration of the roles of the principal. Master’s degree comprehensive exam preparation and Principal Practicum planning are included. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 507, 509, 516, 539, 545, & 555 or department chair approval.

EDAK 599. Practicum for Principalship. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

Demonstration of competence in performance of professional duties through supervised activities in the culminating experience for the MEd/Principal Certificate program upon approval of program coordinator. Guided by principal mentors and university field supervisors, participants execute a custom action plan for professional growth and school improvement based on state standards and leadership practices. For satisfactory completion of practicum requirements, typically one-semester course may be repeated one time unless the student is meeting probationary principal certification requirements. Only 3 semester hours of practicum coursework can be used to satisfy certification plan requirements. $75 Field Assignment Fee. Prerequisite(s): EDAK 500, 501, 507, 509, 516, 539, 542, 545, 555, 560, and MEd in Educational Leadership department chair approval.

EDAK 590. Selected Topics In Edu Adm. 3 Semester Credit Hours.

An examination of different topics each semester with a focus on contemporary issues in Educational Administration and leadership. This course may be repeated for credit as the topic changes.
